The Best Time for a Photoshoot in Tokyo
When to book a Tokyo photoshoot: early morning for empty streets, after dark for neon, cherry blossom in late March, autumn leaves in late November, and the rainy season to plan around.
The best time for a photoshoot in Tokyo is early morning for empty streets in Asakusa, after dark for the neon in Shibuya and Shinjuku, and late March for cherry blossom.

Late November brings the ginkgo and maple colours, and winter’s early dark and clear air suit night shoots. The one season to plan around is the rainy season in June and July.

Time of day
Morning is for Asakusa and the landmarks, before the crowds arrive. Late afternoon gives warmer light in parks. Night is when Tokyo looks most like itself: the neon and screens come on at dusk, around 4.30 pm in December and 7 pm in June, and most street and neon shoots are booked for then.
Cherry blossom: late March
Tokyo’s cherry trees reach full bloom in the last week of March: in 2026 the Japan Meteorological Agency declared full bloom on 28 March, three days earlier than average, and the blossom lasts about a week. The first forecasts for 2027 usually come out in December; in an average year Tokyo reaches full bloom around 31 March. The Cinematic Portrait Photo Shoot offers seasonal sakura locations. Book early for those dates, and note that Shinjuku Gyoen restricts tripods and reflectors during the season (19 March to 26 April in 2026).
Autumn leaves: late November
Ginkgo avenues turn yellow and maples red late in the year; the 2026 forecast put Tokyo’s ginkgo peak around 26 November and the maples around 29 November. It is also a mild, settled time of year, which makes it one of the best months for a shoot.
The rainy season and summer
Tokyo’s rainy season usually runs from early June to around 20 July (in 2026, from about 7 June to 20 July). Rain is not the end of a shoot: reflections on wet streets suit a night session, and most photographers carry on with clear umbrellas or reschedule. Summer after the rain is hot and humid, so book early morning or evening.
Winter
Cold, dry and often clear, with the sun down by about 4.30 pm: it is a good season for the neon, and the illuminations along the streets in December add more light. Wrap up between shots and take the coat off for the photos.
