"This is without a doubt the best photoshoot I’ve ever been to!! I’ve done many throughout my travels and I’ve never had so much fun yet also been so impressed by the photos. Kaisei was absolutely amazing, I heavily recommend him as a photographer. The kimono was also beautiful and super good quality, and the staff at the kimono shop are really kind. It was a seamless experience and super comfortable. The photographer helped me pose and build confidence, and also made me laugh along the way. This was the highlights of my trip, and I will cherish these photos! If I’m in Tokyo again I want to come back and see my photographer again!!"

The Guide
Kimono Shoots in Asakusa: What Is Included and What to Wear
Rental, dressing and the photographer, and how the Asakusa shoots differ.
For a kimono photoshoot in Tokyo, book the Asakusa Guided Photoshoot Including Kimono Rental. It starts at the partner rental shop, Yae Kimono Rental, where you choose a kimono and accessories from the standard set and women have their hair styled; plus sizes are available. Then a photographer takes you round Senso-ji and the streets around it for about two hours, with help on posing, and sends 35 or more edited photos, generally within three days. It costs from US$134 a person (checked October 2026) and is rated 5.0 out of 5 from 8 reviews.

Reviewers describe kind staff at the shop who found them the right kimono, a red one and a styled hairdo for one guest, and photographers who made a first photoshoot easy. Premium kimono upgrades and the raw files are not included; transport to the shop is up to you.
Rental with a shoot, or a shoot with a guide?
Asakusa’s kimono shoots differ in what comes first. Some are a rental shop with a photographer added: you dress, then shoot for an hour nearby. Others are a photo tour with a guide who explains Asakusa as you go. A few are studio-style, with an indoor session under controlled light before the street.

What kimono rental costs, and what to wear under it
If you only want the kimono, Asakusa rental shops start at about ¥2,000 to ¥3,300 for a basic set for the day (a shop listing on LIVE JAPAN and the rental option on GetYourGuide, October 2026), and the rental near Kaminarimon starts at US$19 with hairstyling and luggage storage. Shops do not provide underwear, so wear thin, close-fitting layers underneath, a vest and leggings, and nothing with a high neckline. In summer the shops swap to yukata, the lighter cotton version.
Wearing a kimono as a visitor is common and welcome in Asakusa; the shops exist for it. Wear it the way the staff dress you, left side over right, and move a little more slowly than usual.
A cinematic studio shoot
The Private Cinematic Photoshoot with Kimono is different again: 15 minutes indoors under controlled light, then 15 minutes in Asakusa, with 15 carefully edited photos in about two weeks. It is priced from US$319 for up to four, so it suits a family more than a solo traveller. If you go on to Kyoto, note that Gion’s private alleys have banned photography since 2019, with a ¥10,000 fine; the main streets are fine.

What Guests Say About the Kimono Photoshoot
"I had such a good time with this photoshoot!! I picked a red kimono plus the hairstyling was perfect. I heavily recommend it to anyone looking to get a more cultural experience while in Tokyo. The photographer also was extremely professional yet also fun and easy going. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like a fun day with a friend + beautiful photos as a bonus! It was also amazing value since it included both the kimono rental and photoshoot, I will be doing this again for sure my next time in Japan."

Kimono Photoshoot FAQ
Questions about kimono rental and photoshoots in Tokyo, answered in the first sentence.
About ¥2,000 to ¥3,300 for a basic set for the day in Asakusa, as listed in October 2026. A shoot with the kimono included, such as the Asakusa guided kimono photoshoot, starts at US$134 a person. The rental near Kaminarimon starts at US$19.
Yes: Asakusa's rental shops exist for visitors, and wearing one there is common. Let the staff dress you, left side over right, and treat it with the same care you would any borrowed formal clothes.
In Asakusa, around Senso-ji, where most shoots start at a rental shop near Kaminarimon. The guided kimono photoshoot includes the rental and hair styling; the kimono photoshoot and walking tour is the most reviewed.
Yes: wear thin, close-fitting layers, such as a vest and leggings. Rental shops provide the kimono, obi, sandals and socks, but not underwear. Avoid a high neckline, which shows above the collar.
Senso-ji in Asakusa: the Kaminarimon gate, Nakamise-dori and the five-storey pagoda, and the quieter backstreets around them. Go early, before the crowds; visitors are asked not to photograph inside the main hall.
Long waits at busy shops, tight obis, and walking in sandals. Book a time slot, tell the staff if the obi is too tight, and leave time to change back before the shop closes. Some shops, like the one near Kaminarimon, offer overnight return.
